How do I choose the right size cremation urn?

Prior to purchasing a cremation urn it is important you choose one that will fit your needs.

You would first have to decide where you want to keep all of your loved one's ashes.

Do you plan on storing it all in one place? Or several?

All of my Loved One's Ashes will be in One Cremation Urn

To properly choose the right size cremation urn for your loved one, 99.95% of the time you can determine the correct urn size by knowing your loved one's weight. Your loved one's weight (in lbs) will be a proper ratio of 1 pound per 1 cubic inch.

Here are some examples:

  • a 240 lb. person needs an urn that is approximately 240 cubic inches or larger
  • a 200 lb. person needs an urn that is approximately 200 cubic inches or larger
  • a 150 lb. person needs an urn that is approximately 150 cubic inches or larger
  • a 100 lb. person or pet needs an urn that is approximately 100 cubic inches or larger
  • a 50 lb. person or pet needs an urn that is approximately 50 cubic inches or larger
  • a 25 lb. person or pet needs an urn that is approximately 25 cubic inches or larger
  • a 10 lb. person or pet needs an urn that is approximately 10 cubic inches or larger

There are a ton of other factors that play into how much cremations you will actually receive from the crematorium. Because of that we can't guarantee 100% of the time that an urn will be large enough but if you follow our rules above, or call us to discuss then 99.95% of the time it'll be correct.

All of my Loved One's Ashes will be in Several Places

Following the rules above, the ratio is 1 pound is equal to 1 cubic inch. Many of our customers purchases multiple smaller sized urns to share ashes with the rest of the friends or family. These smaller, or sharing urns, are generally called keepsake urns. Keepsakes are perfect for holding a small to medium size range of ashes.

What if my Urn is the wrong size?

You don't need to worry. It hardly happens, but if it does here are some solutions:

  • If your urn is too small, feel free to purchase several other smaller urns as a gift for close friends and family. They are extremely sincere, and sentimental gifts.
  • If your urn is too large, that can be a great thing. Be creative! You can always fill the rest of the urn up with some of your loved one's favorite belongings such as: their favorite shirt, doll, watch, or memento from their favorite place to go like a baseball, bag of shells from beach, and much more.
